Objectives |
From the scientist and researcher’s sides, it is the first time in history that humanity is approaching the challenge to build an intelligent and autonomous physical agent.
This has compelled the community of the roboticists to become conscious of the effects of the applications of their researches. In 2004, roboticists from all over the world gathered to discuss the guiding lines the so called Roboethics, the applied ethics of the development and use of robots. In a few years, Roboethics has become an important topic of discussion and developments among robotics scientists, so that the main professional associations at world level (among others, Euron – the European Robotics Network of the EC; and the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society) have opened official areas of activity.
Interest in the ethical issues of ICT and robotics has been expressed also by philosophers and scholars (see Ethicbots Project). All these efforts produced the first Roboethics Roadmap, developed from the engineering point of view, consisting of some guidelines for the development and employment of the robots. However, the Roboethics Roadmap was also the result of cross-cultural discussions with philosophers, psychologists, sociologists, in a trans disciplinary effort. |
This track aims to:
- strengthen the collaboration between roboticists, philosophers, and scholars of social science
- to solicit computer ethics experts to contribute to develop the Roadmap
- to open a discussion on some common topics.
